DIGITAL RESIDENCY 2025 (x2)

DIGITAL RESIDENCY 2025 (x2) ✨

Digital Residency 2025 — Digital as Place (X2 COMMISSIONS)

Provocation: What defines “digital” as a place and how does that relate to our physical place of County Durham, in the wider context of the world?

Fee: 2 x Commissions at £10,000 each.

No More Nowt is working on a programme of digital work that intersects and supports the deepening of understanding of the role of digital in cultural engagement with communities like ours. We’re particularly interested in exploring themes of place, identity and connection across our large, dispersed and rural county. This follows our move from working in a defined geographically specific area of the County (East Durham as East Durham Creates) for the first 8 years of our programme into countywide programme as No More Nowt.

We would expect the artists / organisations to work with communities in County Durham or those with clear connections to the place.

County Durham is England’s fourth largest county. It covers a vast area of 862 square miles, and a population over 530,000. Many areas of County Durham are post-industrial communities and highly rural. County Durham is in the top 20% most deprived Local Authorities in England. Of 225 ‘left behind neighbourhoods’ across England (those deprived areas chronically lacking places to meet, connectivity and an engaged community), 16 are in County Durham, twice as many as any other area of England.

Digital exclusion, inequalities in digital access and data poverty continue to be a challenge in the context of our place which was further highlighted by the pandemic and the ongoing reductions in services like Libraries, where those without their own devices have typically been enabled to seek digital access.

We are particularly interested in the idea of residencies exploring the power of shared digital shared spaces and places to empower real-life engagement, particularly for those who may be seen as “easy to ignore” for reasons surrounding their identities. We want to deepen our understanding of the role digital can play for these groups of people in finding a place in culture where they can navigate as themselves. This might include (but is not limited to) queering spaces, those who cannot occupy physical spaces because of illness, disability, life circumstance or caring responsibilities and those who live in areas where our physical programme is not currently active.

Timeline

  • Deadline for submissions is Wednesday 29th January, by 11.59pm. Submissions to be electronically emailed to hello@nomorenowt.org

  • Commission commences February 2025

  • Delivery of all outcomes including reporting should take place by October 1st 2025

DIGITAL CALLOUT FAQS

DIGITAL CALLOUT FAQS ✨

Frequently Asked Questions

Added on 20th January 2025

Q: Can I apply if I am a creative practitioner who does not live in County Durham?

A: YES! The Digital callouts are open to creative practitioners living AND/OR working in County Durham. Because of the nature of Into the Light and it’s ambition to grow and galvanise the cultural sector of our place we are particularly interested in applications from creative practitioners from County Durham but not being a resident of County Durham does not exclude you from applying. Please remember the work must happen with County Durham People.

Q: But where IS classed as County Durham?!

A: We have been asked this a surprising amount, so if you are one of the people wondering then you are not alone! We define County Durham in the same footprint as our Local Authority, Durham County Council. We have included a screenshot here of the boundaries to support you in understanding this. Click Here to view.

Q: Also what do you mean by “Digital” anyway?

A: As a large rural and dispersed place we are interested in exploring how digital can be utilised to increase participation and access to culture, as well as be considered as a place in and of itself where culture can be programmed. Digital work might include:

  • Creating work that is purely digital e.g. A new game space on a digital platform

  • Creating work that uses digital to connect with participants who might not be able to access culture in other ways through interventions we all got familiar with during the pandemic e.g. zoom sessions that engage with those unable to leave the house or who are geographically located across large geography that might make travel prohibitive

  • Creating work were digital plays an integral role in people’s engagement of it e.g. digital integration such as QR codes.

This is not a definitive list and offered as a guide for those considering applying. Remember we would expect to see evidence of genuine engagement with people and place as part of both callouts.

Here’s two examples of previous digital residencies led by No More Nowt to see how digital can be used in a place-based and engagement context:

https://nomorenowt.org/projects/digital-residency-peterlee-75-andrew-wood

https://nomorenowt.org/projects/digital-residency-the-bishops

Q: Can our collective and/or organisation apply?

A: Yes - we use the term ‘creative practitioner’ to encompass all varieties of deliverers. Please note if you are applying as a collective that is not constituted or has a nominated standalone organisation (e.g. an organisation like a CIC with a bank account) then an individual practitioner would need to be named as the lead recipient and this creative practitioner could not then apply separately for their own project.

Q: Can I apply for both the Digital Residency & Test Commission?

A: Technically yes, but please note we will not award the same applicant across both callouts so bear that in mind when applying! We would expect those applying for the Digital Residency to demonstrate a level of competence in utilise digital for engagement whereas the Digital Test Commissions will receive specific mentoring support during their commissions (see below).

Q: You mention mentoring and support connected to the Digital Test Commissions - can you tell me more?

A: Commissioned artists/orgs will be offered the opportunity to receive additional mentoring from our Digital Lead OGRE Studio, bespoke to their specific needs and projects. If undertaken this is paid in addition to the commission amount and equates to a day at AUE day rate £278.74, the structure of which is to be agreed during contracting.

Q: Will No More Nowt support me to connect with communities?

A: Whilst we can provide practical advice and guidance to applicants we cannot help individual ideas be formed and you may want to factor some time/capacity into the application to support this area of development. We would encourage you to think carefully about who you would like to work with and why. Be clear and specific in the application about how you intend to connect with them. This applies to both the Digital Residency and Digital Test Commissions which must both evidence their engagement with our people and place.

Q: Will No More Nowt support me to get a DBS and/or PLI?

A: If you do not currently have a DBS and/or PLI you can include costs associated with securing these within the application budget. DBS requirement will depend on the connected community/organisation but are likely to be required if working with vulnerable adults and/or children. No More Nowt’s host organisation East Durham Trust can support with DBS if required. Please factor in time required to organise this documentation when considering the timeline (DBS can take at least 4 weeks to turnaround and costs £49). Creative Practitioners would be expected to source their own PLI and will not be covered by the PLI of our organisation.

Q: Why did you extend the deadline for the digital callouts?

NMN is all about listening and being responsive to what we hear. Following feedback from our creative community and to help ease the pressures of the new year for artists and freelancers, we made the decision to extend. We wanted to acknowledge personal capacities and mental bandwidths at the start of the new year so added an extra 9 days to apply.

Fee: 5 x Commissions at £2,000 each.

In partnership with OGRE Studio, Durham County Council, Into The Light and Place Lab, we're looking for artists of all mediums and levels of experience in a call-out to experiment.

Digital Test Commissions are designed to support creative practitioners to test and try digital cultural approaches and methods for their practice, particularly for artists who are participatory and socially engaged, collaborating with the communities of County Durham.

Work can be presented entirely digital however it must have a connection to our place and/or people.

OWTSIDE GALLERY — OPEN CALL ✨

OWTSIDE GALLERY — OPEN CALL ✨

CURRENT OPEN CALLS

OWTSIDE

— 0PEN CALL

Our outdoor micro gallery space consists of 4 boards on the outside of Community House in Peterlee.

The purpose of this public gallery is to showcase excellent and diverse artwork. We are particularly interested in work that the communities of our estate might not otherwise get to see and to increase local awareness of No More Nowt arts activity happening both on-site in Community House and County-wide.

This is a rolling open call, and the next deadline will be announced soon following confirmation of our fourth round OWTSIDE gallery.

There’s no theme and no limit to the number of times an artist can apply.

Submissions can be new or existing work.

Successful artists will be awarded a fee of £100 and their work will be printed and flyposted onto the OWTSIDE boards for 6 months.

We would encourage visual artists working across different art forms to apply. Due to the location of the gallery at the heart of a residential community, we will not be able to accept explicit artwork.

What to send us:

Each image should be .jpg files, 300dpi, without watermarks and titled with the name of artist in the order they are to be viewed (for example, FirstnameLastname01.jpg).

Please include the following as a PDF document, with images attached separately — not in a zipped folder.

Artwork title(s), name of artist, brief bio (maximum 100 words), contact details, website url/social media. Those with successful submissions may be contacted for high-resolution files. Artists will retain all copyright of their images.

Submissions / Queries:

Email ellen@nomorenowt.org

We’re really looking forward to hearing from you!

FAQs:

Will my original artwork be installed outside?

No, we will accept photos of original artworks, or digital work. These will then be printed and installed on the boards.

Does my work have to be a square?

No, the boards are 120 x 120cm but we can accept square, landscape or portrait works. Works that aren’t square will be printed in fit.

I’d not call myself an artist, but I like being creative. Can I apply?

YES!

What happens if my work gets damaged?

We will look to get the artwork reprinted and replaced if anything happens to it.

If I apply, then work is installed and I’m not chosen, do I have to reapply?

No, we will keep all applications on file and look at everything when we choose the next work to be installed. However, if you have new work you can send as many applications as you’d like to.

My work isn’t about place, space or the community. Should I apply?

Yes, we have no theme for this open call and will accept any creative work that can be replicated in print. Again, we cannot accept explicit work.

This is a rolling open call, however the deadline for the fourth round of OWTSIDE selection is Monday 13th January 2025 at 5pm.

You can still submit work after this date but it will be considered for the fifth selection of work.
